Medical Terminology Course Description:

This comprehensive one-semester course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of medical terminology, essential for anyone pursuing a career in healthcare or related fields. Students will learn to break down complex medical terms into their root words, prefixes, and suffixes, and develop the ability to accurately interpret medical language used in clinical settings. 

Course Objectives: 

  1. Introduction to Medical Terminology: Understand the structure of medical terms and the system of combining roots, prefixes, and suffixes. 

  1. Body Systems and Terminology: Learn the medical terms related to each body system, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems. 

  1. Anatomical and Physiological Vocabulary: Gain familiarity with anatomical positions, directions, and common physiological processes. 

  1. Pathophysiology and Disease Terminology: Explore terminology related to disease processes, symptoms, and diagnostic procedures. 

  1. Medical Abbreviations and Symbols: Study common abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols used in medical charts and documentation. 

  1. Practical Applications: Develop the ability to accurately use medical terms in a clinical context through case studies and hands-on exercises. 

 

Medical Math Course Description: 

This one-semester course is designed to equip students with the mathematical skills required for success in various healthcare fields. Emphasizing practical application, the course focuses on essential calculations needed for accurate medication dosing, patient assessments, and medical charting. Students will gain confidence in working with numbers and units, performing conversions, and applying mathematical principles to real-world healthcare scenarios. 

Course Objectives: 

  1. Foundational Math Skills: Review of basic arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios as they relate to healthcare. 

  1. Drug Dosage Calculations: Master the essential formulas for determining correct medication dosages, including weight-based, body surface area, and milligrams per kilogram. 

  1. Conversions and Measurements: Learn to convert between different units of measurement, such as metric, household, and apothecary systems. 

  1. Laboratory Calculations: Develop skills in interpreting lab results, performing dilutions, and calculating concentrations for laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures. 

  1. Time and Date Calculations: Study how to calculate time intervals, manage patient schedules, and determine medication administration times.
